This year your deadline for filing your annual tax return with the IRS isn’t April 15, it’s April 18th! Emancipation Day, the day President Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill ending slavery in Washington, D.C. is typically celebrated on April 16. This year Emancipation Day falls on a Saturday, so it will be celebrated on Friday, April 15. Since this day is treated as a federal holiday, federal offices, including the IRS will be closed and Tax Day will be pushed back to April 18.
Last minute taxpayers, it’s time to decide how you will file your taxes this year. You can file electronically, manually, or through a tax preparer, but that doesn’t mean you should wait until April 18 to visit your tax preparer. Call today to make an appointment before all their available appointment times are taken. Before you begin, gather all your tax documents, including: last year’s return, 1099s, W-2s, credit card summaries, emailed and physical receipts, cancelled checks, and any other documents you think you may need. Last year’s return is a good guide to help you gather what’s missing. Next, determine your filing status. If your marital status changed, your family grew, grown children moved out, you bought a house, or went back to college, these things will all affect your tax status and eligibility for tax credits and deductions. As you work through your form, keep in mind there are tax preparers and hotlines to assist you, but don’t fall for any phishing schemes. Remember that the IRS never initiates contact with taxpayers about their accounts through e-mail, text messages, or social media. When you finish up your taxes (hopefully a bit before April 18) come in to Buca di Beppo to celebrate the fact that you won’t have go through the process again for a full year!
