Celebrate “The Heart of Healthcare” During National Nurses Week Saturday, May 6th –  Friday, May 12th, 2017

Nurses are integral to hospitals, clinics, and other health care organizations. They administer aid and medicines, provide quality care for sick or hurt patients, and continually consult with other healthcare providers. They also educate their patients and families, keep meticulous records, and assist doctors around the clock. This broad spectrum of responsibilities is why nurses are referred to as the heart of healthcare.

A Quick History of National Nurses Week

In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland of the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare unsuccessfully petitioned President Eisenhower in proclaiming a day in October as “Nurse Day.” After many additional proclamation attempts throughout the years, progress was finally made in 1982, when the United States Congress and the American Nurses Association (ANA) jointly designated May 6 as “National Nurses Day” and President Ronald Reagan signed a resolution that proclaimed May 6 as “National Recognition Day for Nurses”. In 1991, recognition for nurses expanded from a single day to a full week, which begins on May 6, and continues through May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Specific days of recognition have since been added by the ANA. In 1996, the ANA recognized May 6 as “National RN Recognition Day,” in 1998, the ANA designated May 8 as “National Student Nurses Day,” and since 2003, “National School Nurse Day” has been celebrated each year on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week.

Nurses work days, nights, weekends, and holidays; often spending up to 12 hours at a time on their feet! This year, during National Nurses Week, show these amazing men and women how much they are appreciated by gifting them with a catered meal or gift certificate from Buca di Beppo.
